Ideas for Clubs

Possible events and fundraisers for Educate! clubs:

  • Letter Writing - Letter writing is probably the easiest and best way to raise money. You could potentially raise thousands of dollars, as long as everyone puts in the work to reach out to people they know. For more information about letter writing, check out tips for letter writing.

  • Talks by Speakers - These can be about education, Africa, poverty, international development, human rights, or anything else related in any way to Educate!. You can ask teachers or professors at your school or college who are informed about any related issue to give a talk. Talks, especially by popular or famous teachers or professors, are a very good way to get publicity out about your Educate! club and what you are trying to do.

  • Concerts - Concerts can be a great way to raise money as well as awareness. Concerts can be a performance by one group/band/person or can include several. You could even do a Battle of the Bands concert and bring bands from your school and perhaps even include bands from nearby schools.

  • Dodgeball Tournament - A dodgeball tournament can be a very fun way to get people involved in helping Educate!. You can either charge an entry fee per team or a fee for each player. Make sure to make sure you have checked all the liability issues with you school officials (everyone may be required to sign a waiver) and that you find a good place (such as a gym) to hold your tournament. You can also sell t-shirts before your tournament and get people excited about the event. The Amherst College Educate! club held its first annual dodgeball tournament this past year and raised over $1400, having over 170 participants and selling 150 shirts.

  • An event that gets sponsors - This could be any activity that your club does for which you can get sponsors - a bike ride, a walk-a-thon, or anything else you can think of. The Fairview High Club, and previously Eric Glustrom, did this when they climbed 14,000 ft. peaks in Colorado and got friends and family to sponsor them on a per-peak basis. Eric raised over $2000 by himself!

  • Contacting local businesses - They always are looking to support local causes, particularly those led by students.

  • Bake Sales - Bake sales can be a great way to fundraise on campus and particularly during events where parents or alumni come on campus. They can also be a fun activity for several members of your club.

  • Other Fun Athletic Tournaments - This can include whiffle ball, kickball, handball, four-square... basically anything that you think students at your school would get excited about.

  • Selling Wristbands - Wristbands can be purchased and made fairly cheaply and are a good way to spread awareness of Educate!. You can think of what you would like to say on the wristband but a possible idea could be "Educate! the World". You could also include Educate!'s website on the wristband.

  • Tabling - You can always simply table for Educate! at any parent or alumni event. It is a great way to talk to people face to face about Educate!'s cause and get people involved.

  • Benefit Plays or Concerts - A great way to spread awareness of Educate! cause and involving more people indirectly in the effort. It's great too because plays and concerts will be put on anyways and don't require too much outside work.
