Recent Progress with Educate! Kenya

By Dan McGeeney

Educate! Kenya is a branch of Educate! that was started at the beginning last year at Fairview High School. Vivian Lu and Lulu Feingold, the club's founders, work with Patrick Ngigi, the head of Recruitment and a resident of Kenya. In addition to helping recruit and interview prospective Educate! students, Patrick aids in distributing the money to specific schools.

After meeting Eric Glustrom, the founder of Educate!, Vivian was inspired to form another branch. She had traveled to Kenya once be-fore, and had been in touch with some of the students she had met. After helping found Educate! Kenya, Vivian returned to Kenya for a second trip, during which she taught at a remote school and visited an orphanage, all while helping find prospective students.

One of the things that Educate! Kenya is currently doing to raise money is selling Kenyan bracelets. Educate! Kenya purchased 200 locally made bracelets in Kenya and has been selling them as a way to help local workers in Kenya as well as to raise money for the group. Right now, about half of the bracelets have been sold, bringing in $400.

Educate! Kenya has also worked hard to involve their community. Members of the group have visited and spoken at local rotary clubs, and local stores. Caffe Sole, a coffee shop in Boulder, CO, recently agreed to donate 10% of one day's profits to Educate!, amounting to $200.

Through the hard work and dedication of students in Educate! Kenya and at Fairview High School, Educate! is reaching out to increase the educational conditions throughout various countries in Africa.
