Daniel “Lucky” Muhwezi

A Congolese refugee, Daniel is from Ishasha in the North Kivu region of the Congo. He was awarded an Educate! scholarship in 2004 and now attends Sir Tito Winyi Secondary School in Hoima, Uganda, where he is currently in his last year of Ordinary level. He is very interested in the sciences and hopes to become a doctor when he is older.

A stellar student, Daniel received a scholarship to pay for his tuition (Educate! pays for the rest of his expenses) from an NGO called HPCT. HPCT receives a contract from the UNHCR (the UN's refugee agency) to promote educational progress in Ugandan refugee camps. HPCT thus aims to promote education by giving scholarships to the brightest and hardest working students. It gave two scholarships this year, one to a student of each sex, and Daniel was chosen to receive one. Daniel was awarded the scholarship after finishing first out of 572 students who took the required test in all of Kyangwali Refugee Camp .

In addition to his school work, Daniel started an environmental awareness club at his school called Tree Talk. With Daniel’s leadership, Tree Talk has planted over 50 trees around campus.
