Our Students

Joseph Munyambaza

Joseph Munyambaza fled his home in the Congo in 1996 to Kyangwali Refugee Settlement in Uganda. He attended primary school in Kyangwali and excelled in his classes.

He received a competitive scholarship from the UN, which paid for his school fees at Duhaga Secondary school in Hoima Uganda. Educate! met Joseph at Duhaga and began to supplement his UN scholarship by providing school supplies, food, and healthcare. Once the UN scholarship ran out, Educate! took over Joseph’s sponsorship completely.

At Duhaga Secondary School, he has placed consistently in the top five in his class. On the final national exams for the first four years of secondary school (called O Level) Joseph placed in the first division, the top category. He hopes to specialize in physics, chemistry, biology, and math. In the future, it is Joseph’s goal to become a doctor or an engineer.

Joseph has been equally successful in his activities outside of school. He started a tutoring program in Kyangwali involving several of his fellow students as tutors. The program benefits over sixty refugees in primary and secondary school. He was recently elected to the Educate! Student Board of Directors, where he serves as a liaison between the Educate! students and the leadership of the organization.

He says of his future: “I will never leave my weapon of determination.”
