Marcel
Bahati

In his homeland, the Democratic Republic of Congo,
Marcel was exposed to violence, suffering, and ruthless
violations of human rights. Yet with Educate!s
help he now attends Kyambogo University in Kampala,
Uganda, where he has a safe place to live and learn.
He is currently in his first year and specializes
in French and psychology. He is sponsored by the Educate!
student club at Boulder High School in Boulder, Colorado.
During
his vacation time, Marcel travels around his home
refugee camp, Kyangwali, teaching younger refugees
about what he learned in school. Two of the main subjects
that Marcel teaches to his peers are math and AIDS
awareness. He also distributes mosquito nets with
thinkhumanity.org, another Boulder based organization,
and is helping to construct an orphanage in the camp
along with several other Educate! students.
Upon
completing his education, Marcel's dream is to become
a statesman and fight for peace in his homeland. His
dream is to become the Nelson Mandela of Congo.
In
addition, Marcel was elected Head Boy of Sir Tito
Winyi, his secondary school. The accomplishment is
a testament to his charisma and skill as a leader,
for he is the first Congolese Head Boy the school
has ever had and was only a student at Sir Tito for
less than a year when he was elected. Marcels
aim was to promote tolerance for all nationalities
as Head Boy. Read
