Our
Students
Autobiography:
Sadick Sebufara

I am a male Congolese Refugee aged 19 years. I
am the last born of my mother out of 5 children. My
father was a Doctor his name is Paul Sebufara and
my mothers name is Nyiramuhatsi Odiriya. When
the war broke our, I was just completing primary school,
I was around 12 years. My father was killed and my
mother was beaten to venerability by rebels. I knew
that I was going to die. We walked through thick forests
for 3 days and nights in an attempt to cross the boarder
to Uganda. We reached in Uganda very tired and hungry
and we were settled temporarily in a transit camp
of Nyakabande in Kisoro District of Uganda.
We
spent several days without food and later we were
fed on maize grains throughout until we were transferred
to Kyangwali Refugees settlement.
We
were put in the bush and given hoes and machetes to
carry out agriculture. I was still young and could
not manage handhoeng/digging, on top of that my mother
was a venerable. My two brothers were married and
the elder sister remained in Congo. So I suffered
with my sister whom I follow for along time and later
she also got married. I joined primary school again
in a Government aided primary school which I had completed
from Congo but just because I did not know English.
In school I was so much segregated by the national
pupils for being a refugee. I continued in these difficulties
until I finally did my primary leaving examinations(UNEB)
which could allow me enter secondary school. I did
so well at UNEB that I was eligible for getting a
UNHCR scholarship, unfortunately I missed it due to
! wide spread corruption.
At
that time I remained hopeless and life become tougher.
I could no longer get food or clothes. It is at this
time that Eric Glustrom a humanitarian
came across me. He sympathized with me and thought
he could help. I worked with him for two weeks interacting
with the refugees and photographying his areas of
interest.
Before
he left to U.S.A, he left me in school and later he
sent school fees. I was so happy to receive the first
school fees and confirming that I had become a student
again. In 2002 I became under Educate
an organization for sponsoring refugee students in
Africa which Eric started after his first trip to
Africa.
I
am so grateful with educate. It has served as a brother,
a sister, a friend and even a parent. It pays for
my accommodation, food and every other basic necessities.
I hope that I will be able to accomplish my goal and
realize my vision as well as my dream. My future is
brought.
My
sister whom I follow in the family got married in
2000, my brothers and my mother who is now aged were
forced to migrate far way from the camp due to total
insecurity and went to the boarder. So I spend most
of the time in school and I spend my holidays out
side the camp for my safety. I will be visiting my
old Mom who is now with my brother sometime.
