About Us

Mission Statement

To educate and empower socially responsible young leaders in Africa.

Our Programs

Student Sponsorship

Educate! is a volunteer based non-profit organization that provides scholarships to refugees and a select few underprivileged nationals in Uganda to attend school.

Educate! removes young refugees from the conditions that exist in refugee camps and slums and sponsors their education at some of the finest schools in Uganda. At their schools students receive an excellent education in addition to three meals per day, a warm bed to sleep in at night, and safety.

In addition to funds for tuition, Educate! covers each student's' necessary expenses, including food, school supplies, clothes and health needs. This ensures that our students are able to lead quality lives in the present while laying the foundation for their future.

Since the first three students were sponsored in 2002, Educate! has grown to support over twenty students.

Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship

It is our goal to empower our students to become socially responsible leaders. Educate! is currently developing three new programs which focus on directly encouraging leadership and social entrepreneurship.

Investing More in Each Student

Educate! believes that it is not enough to just educate a student - the student must receive a quality education. For that to happen, it is necessary to invest more in each student.

Educate! students thus receive support for all academic supplies, as well as occasional support for additional classes over their breaks and additional books. We do this for our students because we believe that if we are going to prepare our students to become socially responsible leaders, they must have access to all the educational materials and opportunities available to them.

For this reason, we spend more per student than other similar organizations. We believe that this is the only way to truly have an impact on the student’s life and significantly increase his or her chances for a highly successful future.

How it Works

Educate! students apply to be sponsored, filling out our application and including copies of documents such as their recent report cards. Once selected, we work with each student to try to find a school that best fits their interests, personalities, and goals.

In August 2007, Educate! partnered with Windle Trust Uganda (WTU), a UK based non-profit organization which has a similar mission to ours. WTU acts as a middle man, bringing our students’ tuition funds directly to their schools and giving them their money for school supplies and other expenses in person. In addition, they have a field officer who can be contacted by our students at any time and meets with each student at least once per month. We have benefitted from WTU’s knowledge of the Ugandan education system and their personal connections with many schools. WTU is paid a 15% fee, which covers their administrative costs.

To ensure accountability, WTU prepares a quarterly report containing the signed receipts for tuition paid to the school and for extra expenses given to the students directly.

Educate! Clubs

A significant portion of Educate!'s annual budget is raised by its student clubs, which fundraise, communicate with the sponsored students in Uganda, and raise awareness of what Educate! is doing. Click here for more information about the clubs. More information about our clubs...
