Start an Educate! Student Club

Interested in starting your own Educate! student club at your school? Good! E-mail educate@educateafrica.org expressing interest and then check out the following info:

For high schools:

  • First start by getting the permission of an administrator (usually a principal or vice principal) or at least check if you need their approval.
  • Then you will usually need a teacher sponsor so choose a teacher who you think will be interested in Educate! - preferably one that you know well. It may take a week or two for the school to approve the club, but once they do, you’re set to go.
  • Once your schools approves the club, set up a meeting time and advertise your first meeting. At the first meeting, tell everyone about what Educate! does and the prospective projects you have in mind. See if anyone has any other ideas of projects they would like to do.

For colleges and universities:

  • Find out what the procedure is for starting an on-campus organization.
  • Once you know, advertise (flyers, stuffing mail boxes, telling your friends) your first meeting and go from there. Tell the group about Educate! and what it does and see what kinds of projects the group is interested in undertaking.

Once you started your club:

  • One way to introduce Educate! to the school could be to do human rights and refugee awareness and then work to alleviate the problem one person at a time by raising money to send a refugee to school. Through awareness, everyone would know of the problem and you would provide an easy way to make a difference in an affected person's life.
  • Your club can hold guest speakers, concerts, raffles, auctions, or anything else you want. One of the best ways to raise money is to send fundraising letters out to family, friends, and local businesses (for a sample fundraising letter click here).
  • If your club raises enough money, it can adopt a student, pay for his or her education, and build a cross-cultural friendship with him or her. Either way, you have the opportunity to contact all of the Educate! students.
  • In addition, you can do other educational and Africa awareness projects to let your school know of the situation Educate! students live in.

Educate! can provide you with any materials that you may need from brochures to posters, to stamps and envelopes. Also, if you are hosting a big event Educate! can help cover some of the expenses.
